Intro to Sailing

This taster session introduces you to the fun of sailing in a safe and informative way. Bring a change of clothes, towels, shoes that can get wet, sunblock, hat.

Course content

  • A brief introduction to the boat on land
  • Accompanied onto the water with an instructor in your boat
  • Introduction to the boat and the option to have a go at sailing independently when you are ready

Sailing Level 1

Level 1 introduces you to the basics of sailing. No need to have done a taster session before.

Timing

Course content

  • Learn how to make a sailing boat stop and go
  • Turn the boat around (tacking)
  • Sail a short upwind course
  • Put the sail up on the boat (rigging)
  • Know what to wear, how to put on a buoyancy aid and the local hazards around sailing
  • Understand the basic terms used in sailing

Sailing Level 2

Level 2 develops the skills learnt in Level 1 and introduces new sailing techniques.

Course content

  • Learn to tack and gybe effectively
  • Understand and use the 5 essentials of sailing (how to keep control of the boat and sail faster)
  • Sail on all points of the wind
  • Come alongside a moored boat (upwind, downwind, Reach)
  • Recover a boat from a capsize on its side
  • Understand some of the rules for sailing
  • Rig your boat

Sailing Level 3

Level 3 develops sailing skills learnt in Level 2 and aims to progress them to the next competency stage, enabling you to hire an Oman Sail boat.

Course content

  • Learn to rig your boat independently for the current weather conditions
  • Improved sailing on all points of the wind
  • Recover a boat from total inversion
  • Pick up a man overboard
  • Understand the basic rules of sailing
  • Be able to start and complete a simple race
